US Labor Market Shows Modest Job Growth

(MENAFN) The US economy generated 130,000 new positions in January 2026, while the unemployment rate climbed to 4.3%, up from 4% in January 2025, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday.

The publication of the January data, initially scheduled for last Friday, was postponed due to the recent partial federal government shutdown.

The total number of jobless individuals in the nation remained at 7.4 million, although this is higher than the 6.9 million recorded a year ago when the unemployment rate stood at 4%.

Employment growth was mainly observed in the health care, social assistance, and construction industries during the first month of the year.

Conversely, jobs in the federal government and financial activities sectors decreased, partially offsetting the gains seen in other industries.

Looking at major workforce segments, the unemployment rate for teenagers fell to 13.6%, while the rates for adult men and women exhibited minimal change.
